Defination of Past continuous tense & their uses in English & Assamese language.

**         (Past continuous tense)

সংজ্ঞা:- যেতিয়া অতীত কালত কোনো কাম কৰি থকা বুজায় তাকে Past continuous Tense বোলে।(When a work is understood to be doing in the past is called Past Continuous Tense.)
Structure:-
S + Was/were + V₁+ ing + O
Conjugation of the verb take to ( play).
I was playing cricket .
We were playing cricket.
You were playing cricket .
He/She/It was playing cricket .
They were playing cricket .

** Past continuous Tense ৰ ব্যৱহাৰ:-(Use of past continuous tense.)
1) অতীতৰ কোনো এটা সময়ত কোনো কাম চলি থকা বুজাবলৈ Past continuous Tense ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা হয়।( Past continuous means are used to explain that something is going on at some point in the past.)
যেনে:-
1) কালি ৰাতি দহবজাত তেওঁ এখন উপন্যাস পঢ়ি আছিল।
=> He was reading a novel at 10 pm yesterday .
2) তেওঁ শুই আছিল।
=> He was sleeping.
3) মই খাই আছিলো।
=> I was eating.
4) তুমি পঢ়ি আছিলা।
=> You were reading.
5) ৰাজু ৰৈ আছিল।
=> Raju was waiting .
** অতীতত হোৱা দুটা কামৰ ভিতৰত যিটো চলি থকা বুজায় তাৰ verb অত past continuous tense হয়। আনটো simple past Tense হয়।( Of the two things that have happened in the past, the verb of what is understood to be going on is so past continuous tense. The other is the sample past tense.)
যেনে:- 1) মই তেওঁক লগ পাওঁতে তেওঁ এখন কিতাপ পঢ়ি আছিল।
=> He was reading a book when I met him.
2) তাই পঢ়ি থাকোঁতে কোনোবাই দুৱাৰত টুকুৰিয়াইছিল।
=> While she was reading someone knocked at the door.
3) আমি খেল চাই থাকোতে আমোদজনক ঘটনা ঘটিছিল।
=> While we were watching the match an interesting incident took place.
4) সেই সময়ত তেওঁ ফুলনিত বহি আছিল।
=> At that time he was sitting in the garden.
5) আমি ঘৰ পাওঁতে আয়ে ভাত ৰান্ধি আছিল।
=> Mother was cooking meal when we arrived home.
6) বাছৰ পৰা নামোতেঁ বুঢ়াজন পিছলি পৰিছিল।
=> The old man slipped while he was getting off the bus.
7) গোটেই ৰাতিপুৱা বৰষুন দি আছিল।
=> It was raining all through the morning.
8) মই অহাৰ সময়ত তেওঁ পঢ়ি আছিল।
=> He was reading when I came.
9) যোৱাকালি ৰাতি আমি চিনেমা চাই আছিলো।
=> Last night we were enjoy cinema.
10) বাটত ফুৰি থাকোতে মই তেওঁক লগ পাইছিলো।
=> I met him while I was walking in the street .
11) তুমি শুই থাকোঁতে সি আহিছিল।
=> He came while you were sleeping.
12) সি তেতিয়া কি কৰি আছিল।
=> What was he doing then?
13) ৰাতিপুৱা সিঁহতে পঢ়ি আছিল।
=> They were reading in the morning.
14) সিহঁত নদীৰ পাৰত ফুৰি থাঁকোতে ঘটনাটো ঘটিছিল।
=> The incident occured when they were walking .
15) খেলি থাকোতে তেওঁ হঠাতে বাগৰি পৰিছিল।
=> He fell down suddenly while he was playing.
** অতীতত একেলগে দুটা কামচলি থকা বুজাবলৈ দুয়োটাতে Past continuous Tense হয়। (Past continuous means are both to explain that two tasks are going on simultaneously in the past.)
যেনে:- 1) যেতিয়া মই পঢ়ি আছিল, মোৰ ভাইজন শুই আছিল।
=> While I was writing my brother was sleeping.
2) মই শুই থাকোঁতে আমি খেলি আছিলোঁ।
=> We were playing while mother was sleeping.
3) মই গা -ধুই থাকোতে আমি কাম কৰি আছিলো।
=> We were doing the work while I was bathing.
4) মই নাচি থাকোতে সি গান গাই আছিল।
=> He was singing a song while I was dancing.
5) আমি বহি থাকোতে সি কিতাপ পঢ়ি আছিল।
=> He was reading a book while we were sitting.
** ভৱিষ্যতৰ পৰিকল্পনাৰ ক্ষেত্ৰত যিদৰে present continous tense ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা হয়,অতীতত কৰা পৰিকল্পনাৰ ক্ষেত্ৰত সেইদৰে Past continuous tense ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা হয়। ( Past continuous tense is used in the same way as present continuous tense is used in future plans.)
যেনে:- 1) মানুহজনে সেইদিনা তেওঁ লৰা ছোৱালীৰ কাৰণে কিছুমান পুতলা কিনিলে কিয়নো তেওঁ পিছদিনাই ঘৰলৈ যোৱাৰ কথা।
=> The man bought some toys for his children that day, for he was saving for home the next day.( এই ক্ষেত্ৰত মানুহজনে ঘৰলৈ যোৱাটো আগতেই ঠিক কৰিছিল।)
** অতীতত আমনি লগাকৈ সঘনে কৰা কাম বুজাবলৈ (always ব্যৱহাৰ কৰি) Past continuous Tense ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা হয়। ( Past continuous Means is used to explain frequent tasks (using always) in the past.)
যেনে:-1) তেওঁ সদায়ে ধন বিচাৰিছিল।
=> He was always asking for money.
( এনেদৰে সদায় ধন বিচৰাটো বক্তাই ভাল পোৱা নাছিল).
** EXCEPTION(নিয়ম বহিৰ্ভূত বা সুকীয়া):- কোনোবাই এটা কাম কৰিম বুলি ভাবিছিল, কিন্তু কামটো কৰিব পৰা নগল। এনেকুৱা পৰিস্থিতিত Past continuous tense ব্যৱহাৰ কৰিব পাৰি। তলৰ উদাহৰণ বিলাকলৈ মন কৰিলে কথাটো ওলাই পৰিব। (EXPRESSION (out of the rules or different): - Someone thought i'd do one thing, but couldn't do it. In such situations, The Past continuous tense can be used. If you look at the examples below, it will come out.)
যেনে:- 1) মই আহিব খুজিছিলো কিন্তু বৰষুণৰ কাৰণে আহিব নোৱাৰিলো।
=> I was coming, But I could not come due to rain.
2) মই তোমাক টকাখিনি যোৱা কালিয়ে দিব খুজিছিলো, কিন্তু বেংক বন্ধ আছিল।
=> I was giving you the money yesterday itself, But the bank was closed.
3) এই গাড়ীখন মই কিনিব খুজিছিলো, কিন্তু টকা যোগাৰ কৰিব নোৱাৰিলো।
=> I was buying this car, But could not  manage money.
