We know that Present tense can be divided into 4 parts. Similarly, there are 4 parts of the Past tense. So we have to do as we do below to take the Present tense to the Past Tense.

1) Changes Present indefinite to Past Indefinite tense:

a) He speaks English .( Present.Inde.)

=> He spoke English.( Past.Inde.)

2) Changes Present continuous to Past continuous tense.

a) He is speaking English.(Present.con)

=> He was speaking English.( Past .con.)

3) Changes Present Perfect to Past Perfect.

a) He has spoken English.( Present.Perfect.)

=> He had spoken English .( Past.Perfect.)

4) Changes Present Perfect continuous tense to Past Perfect continuous tense.

a) He has been speaking English.( Present.Perfect.con.)

=> He had been speaking English.( Past perfect.cocontinuou tense.)
